Only the Rioters are to Blame

Safe in Italy, I am horrified to hear about what is happening in London, Birmingham and Liverpool. An eyewitness in London tells me that most of the looters and rioters near him are black. Of course, most people would be afraid to publish that, but fear is the mind-killer, as we read in Dune. In Toronto we finally got the courage to talk about "the Jamaican problem", which was refreshing and also helpful, for it moved the conversation from race to culture.

England has several cultures, often rooted in class. Chav culture, perhaps the most benighted, transcends racial boundaries. It idealizes the most tawdry aspects of American pop culture, like the misogynist and violent rap music born in some of the most horrible slums to be found in the USA. We can see the fruits of chav culture in the photos of the burning double-decker London bus.

We are what we eat, it is said, and we are also what we read and what we watch and that to which we listen. If people sing along, from the age of five, to music that tells them to "hate the police", they are eventually going to hate the police. Why is this so hard to accept? The proof is out there on the London streets, in Birmingham and in Liverpool.

If it spreads to Edinburgh, I will be even angrier. I will, in fact, want tanks in the streets.

Meanwhile, although the looters make me furious--can those be THE ENGLISH? Ordinary Englishmen and Englishwomen casually walking into a smashed shop and looting?--I think I am more angry at journalists asking who else is at fault. Is it "cuts"? Is it "David Cameron"?

NO. IT IS THE LOOTERS THEMSELVES.

Ordinary people are choosing to behave in an absolutely despicable fashion. This is horrifying. Why are Englishmen and Englishwomen (of whatever colour) behaving like this? It cannot be blamed on such recent history as the supposed "cuts" or the election of David Cameron. This suggests a slow, long-term decline in English morals and public behaviour. Shame, shame, shame.

Since the looters will probably not be shot, as they would have been shot at other times in history or in other places, I hope they are named and shamed to a draconian degree.

The whole world is watching and eventually it will forget the very concept of the "English gentleman" and the "English lady." Perhaps before long, the present generation will completely completely squander the respect and goodwill won by their quieter, dignified ancestors.

In the old days, no matter how poor he were, or if he were in prison, or in a Japanese death camp, an Englishman was proud to be English. No more, it would seem.

P.S. Read this yet? A piece in the "What in heaven's name happened?" puzzle.

It's also instructive to read Inspector Gadget's blog and realize the demoralization of British police inthe face to rioters because they have their hands tied.

And the legal system doesn't support them.

I will have to agree with you Seraphic on this one. I think I also remember your, or a USA forensic psychologist's post (Dr. Helen Smith)about how some British women decide that the "loo"/toilet is any place and coming home from bars ... well you get the picture.

Worse, your statement has been given recent proof bt MTV. They have had high television ratings for a show called "Jersey Shore" about a group of early 20's to 30 year olds who are at least 1/2 Italian (with exception of "Snooki" who is an adopted Chilean in an Italian family) and their partying culture at New Jersey's "Jersey Shore," plus their sexual exploits.

Well MTV did something special for Britain and tried to follow up on Jersey Shore's success with a show called "Geordie Shore". Same plot, same type of locale but with 8 British people. There are only 6 episodes, but I had to say after watching them all in 1 afternoon, those British youth certainly are a sad microcausm for British society today. The behaviours of the Jersey Shore kids were magnified and ofted topped by the Geordie Shore kids. Worse, even when parents have come by the vacation house to see their kids and have to meet their sexual partners or see their kids hungover, they brush it off like it was no big deal. Not once on the show did any of those kids regret their sexual exploits, although a couple of the housemates did try to get in relationships with each other, more because the female partner "made them wild" vs truly falling in romantic love. At least on the Jersey Shore, two of the castmates are in an on-again and off-again realationship where they do cry when they are apart and hate when they cheat on each other. Plus in one season the Jersey couple took one of the vacation house cars to sneak off and go to church one Sunday (They girl Sammie is Italian descent and the guy Ronnie is 1/2 Italian - 1/2Spanish/Latino/Mexican???, so I am going to ASSUME Roman Catholic, although the Chruch they show them coming out of was an ugly ultra modern thing.)

I agee with everything you say Seraphic. I could not believe my eyes last night.

We are reaping the bitter fruit of liberalism - a culture which stresses rights over duties and undermines authority in all its forms from the parent and school teacher to the policeman and judge.

Gosh it reminds me of the night Vancouver lost the Cup. But this one keeps going on and on!
I was watching the news tonight and one well known educator was pretty much saying "I told you so." She mentioned about how these are kids 25 and under who have never had a job and think they deserve everything. How many will actually get charged? How many police officers will get charged? Welcome to the reality of our times. Pray for conversions.

It's spread now - I live in St Albans, an affluent London suburb. Last night someone set fire to my block of flats, and only by the grace of God did I smell the fire quick enough to get out. 10 more minutes and it would have come through my floor. The rioters also set fire to a local golf and tennis club, and twitter tells me it has now burned to the ground.

This article is a great summary:

Elizabeth, I am so sorry that happened to you. It really is an outrage. Not only should the arsonists be charged with arson, they should be charged with attempted murder.

I really don't know what else to say.

Teresa (Theresa?) May and whoever else is keeping the police on a leash is betraying Londoners and law-abiding people of the other afflicted English cities. Perhaps it is time to realize that Teresa May and the others in charge of the police (not the police themselves) are not on your side. They are not on the side of the ordinary Englishman and Englishwoman but on the side of the mob. If they weren't on the side of the mob, the mob would not still be attacking the law-abiding shopkeepers and residents of London.

Hi Seraphic - I think in my upset I didn't express myself very clearly, luckily the flat didn't actually burn down (I have some great neighbours and they managed to put it out before the firemen came) but it was about 10-15 minutes away from burning through the floor boards so it was a close call. I should have written that more clearly, I hope I didn't cause any distress - I was a bit terrified (and then stayed up all night worried they would come back, so sleep deprived as well!). I did later find out that the same people burned down a local golf and tennis club and set other fires throughout town (according to the lovely policewoman who came to investigate today). It's a fairly quiet town here, but last night the police were worried enough to have 2 riot police vans full of officers on standby, and more than 10 fire trucks went to the scene of the golf/tennis club fire but weren't able to stop it in time (we could hear the explosions caused by the fire from a mile away!). Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I am not yet homeless so it was scary but (thank God) it's ok now.

Thank you for letting me know! I'm very glad it didn't all burn down and that you still have your house. My sister, who knows St. Alban's well, sent me a link to an article about the sports club. Such madness.

By the way, thanks for pointing out it's the looters' fault! I've been innundated with friends and relatives back in the US telling me how disenfranchised the poor rioters are and how we must understand their motiviations so that they will no longer be abused by society, which is really beyond frustrating. It's made me so angry (probably more than is reasonable) but it's refreshing that there are people who empathise with the victims and not the criminals!

No wonder you are angry. It was the looters abusing "society" (which means you and me and our neighbours), not the other way around, of course.

I am sure various Americans and Canadians, safe across the ocean, got actually high on their own goodness in empathizing with the rioters. It must be so thrilling to look down from such Olympian heights on the people who are made angry by badly dressed, badly spoken, demoralized people burning down shops and homes.
